Healthy Apple Crisp (GF + Vegan!)

Healthy Apple Crisp (GF + Vegan!)

Tis the season for fall inspired dishes, some savory and some sweet! I love enjoying seasonal dishes and desserts, yet I like making them healthier by minimizing the sugar and swapping white flour for whole grains and higher fiber alternatives. This Healthy Apple Crisp with no added sugar is the perfect healthier dessert for fall while still tasting absolutely indulgent and delicious! It is reminiscent of all of the apple pies my mom made for us growing up after going apple picking — such great memories!

This Apple Crisp is super easy to make! I like making the crisp ahead of time, then just popping it in the oven when we’re ready for dessert! This recipe has lots of soluble fiber from the apples, almond flour and oats, making it a great recipe for a healthy gut and feeding our beneficial gut bacteria, without the added sugar!

Ingredients
  1. 5 apples, chopped (I used macintosh)
  2. juice from 1/4 lemon
  3. 1 1/4 cup almond flour
  4. 1 cup gluten free oats
  5. 3/4 cup vegan butter (I use Miyokos Creamery), or sub coconut oil
  6. 1 tbsp. ground cinnamon
  7. 1/4 tsp. cloves
  8. 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  9. 1/4 tsp. sea salt
Instructions
  1. Start by pre-heating the oven at 350 degrees F.
  2. Chop the apples and place in a large rectangular baking pan, spread out evenly over the bottom. Slice a 1/4 lemon and squeeze over the apple slices, tossing gently to prevent them from browning.
  3. Meanwhile, melt the vegan butter or coconut oil in the microwave or in a saucepan. Add the almond flour, gluten free oats, melted vegan butter, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and sea salt to a large bowl and mix well until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  4. Top the chopped apples with the crumble mixture and bake for 45 minutes.
  5. Let cool for 3-4 minutes and enjoy!
Notes
  1. Optional: add your favorite nuts into the crumble for more healthy fats and fiber, or toss the apples with pure maple syrup for more sweetness!
